China smuggled goods have been caught again! There is ₱2.02 billion worth of frozen mackerel that was declared as other products.
March 5, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced that they will file a criminal case against those responsible for a large smuggling operation. It was declared as other food, but the authorities caught the fraud. Because of this, they may face economic sabotage and other serious charges.
According to the BOC, the smuggled fish were hidden in 19 40-ft container vans. The importation declaration was frozen taro fries, cuttlefish balls, and taro sweet potato balls. But on January 20, after receiving an intelligence report, customs officers examined the shipment and discovered that the document was forged. As a result, they immediately confiscated the shipment.
According to the BOC, they have issued a seizure order and are coordinating with the Department of Finance (DOF) to file charges against those involved under Section 20 of the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act.
The agency said that large-scale agricultural smuggling is a serious crime. Those found responsible could face life imprisonment and a hefty fine.
The government continues to fight against the illegal import of agricultural products to maintain the country's food security and economic stability. The BOC reminded that smuggled frozen mackerel not only violates trade regulations, but also affects the local fishing industry and the livelihood of fishermen.
In addition, the Plant Quarantine Service of the Bureau of Plant Industry (PQS-BPI) also requested to inspect the shipment because it did not comply with phytosanitary regulations.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing, and those responsible will face criminal charges.
