The residents of Barangay Lawa, Obando, Bulacan have been accustomed to floods for a long time due to the subsidence of the land and continuous rains caused by monsoons and typhoons.

According to the locals, even before the powerful Typhoon Ondoy passed, they had already experienced severe flooding due to other bad weather.

The local government reports that the water level in their area is rising by one centimeter per year. Fortunately, they are protected by a dike so the flooding has not gotten worse.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe said that severe disasters have increased by 400% due to climate change. It also called for collective action to deal with the climate crisis and its impact on health.
