Finally, Nissan has shared the details of their “R32 EV” project, which will be launched at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. This one-off electrified Godzilla demonstrates the possibility of combining historic automotive heritage and cutting-edge EV technology. Led by veteran EV powertrain engineer Ryozo Hiraku, the project aims to preserve the spirit of the R32 GT-R while ensuring its readiness for future performance. It is equipped with two 160 kW electric motors and a 62 kWh battery from the LEAF NISMO RC02. Despite the extra weight of 370 kg from the EV components, the car's torque and performance have been carefully tuned to match the R32 GT-R's original specs.
The R32 EV's iconic appearance, painted in Gun Gray metallic, was retained, while innovative components such as the NISMO Sports suspension with Öhlins dampers, larger R35-inspired brakes, and custom 18-inch wheels were added. Inside, nostalgia meets modernity, featuring Recaro seats and a digital update to the original gauge cluster. To recreate the driving experience that fans loved, Nissan equipped the EV with paddle shifters, artificial engine sounds resembling the RB26DETT, and simulated gear shifts.
Currently, Nissan has no plans to make the vehicle a commercial release. Watch more details of the R32 EV in Nissan's video.
Nissan is set to unveil an electrified version of the iconic R32 Skyline GT-R at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS), which will be held from January 10-12 at Makuhari Messe, Tokyo. This project, which has been in development for more than 18 months, reinvents the legendary “Godzilla” as an innovative EV.
The original R32 Skyline GT-R, produced from 1989 to 1994, was powered by a 2.6L twin-turbo inline-six engine with 276 hp. It has an advanced all-wheel-drive system that can adjust power distribution from rear-wheel drive to a 50:50 split as needed. While Nissan has yet to release specific details on the EV conversion's power or performance, the project reflects a growing trend in the automotive industry to turn classic cars into electric cars. It combines the nostalgic appeal of vintage cars and the benefits of environmentally-friendly electric mobility.
Moreover, the “R32 EV” will be unveiled alongside Nissan's latest innovations. Attendees of this year's TAS will have the opportunity to witness a unique fusion of heritage and cutting-edge technology, with an electrified Godzilla expected to be a feature of the event.
