More Filipinos are in favor of the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte (41%) compared to those who disagree (35%), according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey commissioned by the Stratbase Group. 19% have no opinion on the issue. The survey was conducted from December 12 to 18, where two impeachment complaints were previously filed against Duterte related to his office's use of confidential funds.
Support for impeachment is highest in Balance Luzon (50%), followed by Metro Manila (45%) and Visayas (40%), while it is lowest in Mindanao (22%). On the other hand, those who disagree are highest in Mindanao (56%), Duterte's so-called bastion. Those who are undecided are the most in the Visayas (24%), and are lower in other parts of the country.
Based on the survey, 46% of respondents believe that the unexplained use of confidential funds by the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education is the main basis for impeachment. This was followed by Duterte's refusal to answer the investigations (36%), alleged ill-gotten wealth (25%), and threats against some officials such as President Marcos and Speaker Romualdez (24%).
According to impeachment proponents, they want Congress to act quickly on the complaints before the regular session ends on February 7, 2025. However, they admit that the number of lawmakers who support it is still insufficient, as there are only six endorses the complaint. Having a sufficient number of lawmakers is essential for the impeachment process to move forward.
Meanwhile, former Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño that this impeachment issue will be a big issue in the upcoming midterm elections. According to him, the position of the senators who will run again will be evaluated by the voters. He added that the first months of the year, such as January and February, are known as the time of major political changes, so their action is aligned with "perfect timing."
