If Senator Raffy Tulfo had his way, he would raise the fine for private vehicles passing through the EDSA bus lane to P50,000, up from the current P5,000. He believes the fine should be increased, as P5,000 is too small a penalty for those caught violating the rule.
"Increase the fine because P5,000 is too small; let's make it P50,000," said Tulfo.
The issue of private vehicles using the EDSA bus lane resurfaced after a vehicle with plate number 7, exclusive to senators, fled from authorities. Tulfo commented that SUV passengers should not complicate matters for the public and suggested that those involved should simply admit their mistake.
Tulfo added that, according to information he received, a relative of a senator was reportedly in the SUV. While Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s name was mentioned, it was clarified that he was not the one in the vehicle.
Tulfo also mentioned that while all 24 senators are now under suspicion, he believes that none of them are directly involved in the EDSA controversy. He emphasized that the issue should not be unfairly blamed on the entire Senate.
Tulfo expressed that if he were in the passenger's place, he wouldn't make things harder for others. He suggested admitting the mistake, having the driver surrender, and apologizing. He also noted that, currently, all 24 senators are being blamed, but he believes none of them are involved in the EDSA controversy.
