DOH reported 383 road accidents during Holy Week, April 13 to 19, in 50 reporting sites.
According to the report, 296 cases were motorcycle accidents, and five of them resulted in the death of riders. 324 of those involved were not wearing safety gear like helmet or seatbelt. 31 drivers were drunk while driving.
DOH said that the goal is to drop the road crash fatality rate to 4 per 100,000, but now it is at 11 per 100,000 more. So they remind everyone, especially riders: always wear a helmet, don't drink when driving, follow the speed limit, and don't use your phone while on the road.
Despite the accidents, the PNP said the Holy Week was generally peaceful. There were 31 drowning incidents, lower than the 43 cases last year. The PNP said this was due to good coordination of the PNP, AFP, Coast Guard and LGUs.
