4chan, a popular but notorious internet message board, has been hacked, according to posts circulating online. It is said that someone released the private info of moderators, along with several screenshots of the site's internal system.
This was first noticed when a previously inactive section of the site suddenly came back to life with the words "U GOT HACKED" written at the top, according to Wired magazine.
According to Alon Gal, co-founder of Hudson Rock, the hack appears to be real based on screenshots circulating online. A 4chan moderator, according to TechCrunch, did not deny the authenticity of the screenshots.
On April 15, 4chan was reportedly off and on, and the site did not immediately respond to messages. One of the alleged moderators who was hit by the hack sent a reply using a 4chan email but only provided a link to a 4-minute explicit video montage, unrelated to the issue.
4chan is known as a site full of memes, trolls, and dark content. It's also home to Anonymous, several incel groups, and extreme political content. It's also popular now for AI-generated nonconsensual content, making it even more dangerous.
The amount of damage? Not sure yet, but if infrastructure and personal info were also compromised, the impact on cybersecurity and privacy could reach ₱500,000 or more.
