In total, 14 crew members were rescued, including those who were rushed to the hospital. Search and rescue is ongoing for 10 missing crew members — 7 are Filipinos and 3 are Chinese. According to authorities, they may have been trapped in the engine room of the sunken ship.
The MV Hong Hai 16 was carrying sand and owned by Keen Peak Corp.. The local government was reportedly unaware of the ship's arrival, and only learned of it when residents reported it.
The Philippine Coast Guard has installed oil spill containment booms around the ship to prevent the spread of oil. The potential damage is estimated to be ₱5 million and above, especially if the ocean and local livelihoods are affected.
