
Julie Alipala, a veteran journalist from Zamboanga, passed away Thursday morning. She was known for reporting on war, conflict, and peace in Mindanao. She worked for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and passed away at the age of 58.
In late 2024, she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer with serous carcinoma. While undergoing treatment, she was hospitalized due to difficulty breathing. Despite her illness, she remained dedicated to her work as a journalist.
He bravely covered the news in Zamboanga, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, reporting on the impact of the fighting on communities. According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), he is a ardent defender of press freedom.
He was also a long-time member of the NUJP national directorate and provided training for the safety and welfare of journalists in the country. In 2018, he experienced online harassment after he reported on the case of seven farmers killed in Sulu.
