In a cool project between CTU and BJMP-7, 27 PDLs from Cebu City and Danao City were given the opportunity to study in college. This includes 22 males and 5 females from the Cebu City Male and Female Dormitories as well as the Danao City Jail.
It's called the Center for Innovation in Education Behind Bars (CIEBB). Classes started on March 17, where they are enrolled in a Certificate of Technology, major in Computer Technology, which is an associate degree. It's so cool because even though they're in jail, they're still studying.
Classes are conducted via Zoom and assignments are submitted to jail depository areas. CTU faculty regularly visit for major exams. Students are not yet included in the free education program so the local jail supports their fees.
According to Dr. Denilin Batulan, project leader, it is important to give PDLs a chance to have a fresh start. In 2016, he proposed a skills training that was implemented in 2018 including computer software servicing, welding, and bread and pastry for TESDA National Certificate Level 2 (NC II). Because some wanted to finish college, CIEBB was formed.
