A 27-year-old father died after rescuing his 3-year-old son from a serious road accident. They were hit by a speeding dump truck while riding their motorcycle in Sitio Tapuco, Barangay Pit-os, Cebu City, around 10 p.m. on March 20.
According to the police report, the father and son were plowed into from behind by a dump truck that was counterflowing to overtake. Due to the force of the impact, they were thrown from the motorcycle. Despite the danger, the father managed to grab his son and push him under a parked truck to avoid more serious injuries.
Unfortunately, the father fell on the paved road and was hit in the head by the front wheel of the truck, causing his instant death. Meanwhile, the child only suffered a head injury and was immediately taken to the hospital by his mother.
According to relatives, the father and son were not wearing helmets because they were going to a nearby destination. The father was on his way to Barangay Pit-os to pick up his live-in partner from work when the tragedy occurred.
The driver of the dump truck fled after the accident but later surrendered to the police. He is currently detained at the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office and is facing a case of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide, Physical Injury, and Damage to Property.
