The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released dramatic video footage on Tuesday about last week’s shooting on Glenn Hills Drive in which an armed suspect was hospitalized in critical condition.
The video was released after a meeting with Sheriff Gino Brantley, Chief Deputy Robert Sams, Chief of Staff Lewis Blanchard, and the family of suspect Brandon Hill, who were given the opportunity to view the footage before it was shown to the public.
"We understand the community's interest in this case, and we are committed to being open and accountable in our actions as law enforcement," said Sheriff Brantley. "We also want to ensure that the suspect's family has an opportunity to view the video before it is made public."
How the Incident Happened:
Last Thursday, at around 1:08 p.m., police were called to 3500 Primrose Drive for a domestic dispute. According to the woman who reported it, Hill broke the windows of her home and stole her gun before fleeing.
While searching for Hill, Deputy David Hopkins found him on Glenn Hills Drive around 1:29 p.m.
After confirming Hill's identity, Deputy Hopkins used his vehicle's PA system to order Hill to put his hands up. When Hopkins got out of his vehicle, he repeatedly ordered Hill to put his gun down.
Instead of complying, Hill pointed his gun at Hopkins twice, according to the video. As a result, Deputy Hopkins fired at Hill to stop the threat.
Deputy Hopkins immediately attended to Hill and called emergency medical services. While Hill was being treated, he allegedly stated that he wanted to cause harm to himself, further demonstrating the serious threat he posed.
Investigation and Results:
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Regional Force Investigation Team conducted a thorough investigation into the incident, which was also reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office. Both agencies determined that Deputy Hopkins’ actions were justified due to the immediate threat to his safety and the public.
As part of their commitment to openness with the public, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office released body-worn camera footage to clearly show the events and support the conclusion that Deputy Hopkins followed their agency’s guidelines and the law.
