Nintendo has unveiled the long-awaited Switch 2 console, the next generation of the popular Switch. With a new video released, the company showed the design and some functionality of the new console, but there are still many unanswered questions: the price, release date, and list of games at the launch of the Switch 2 remain a mystery. However, the video did provide a few Easter eggs for the Nintendo community, including a teaser for the new Mario Kart and the promise of more information at a Nintendo Direct session on April 2.
The video confirms many details from leaks and rumors that have been circulating for the past few years. In appearance, the Switch 2 looks like a larger version of the Switch, the Joy-Cons have magnetic connections, and it looks like the Joy-Cons can be used as a mouse.
When the Switch 2 is released, the nearly decade-long run of the original Switch — released in March 2017 — as Nintendo's flagship console will end. The original Switch was a huge success and, as of October 2024, it was the third best-selling gaming console of all time, behind only the Nintendo DS and Sony's PlayStation 2.
The Switch 2's official debut has become more clear over the last 12 months, after Nintendo's CEO confirmed in March that it would be announced within a year, and in November, the company also confirmed that it would be compatible with games from on the original Switch. Accessory pre-orders from third-party companies have also given an idea of what the console might look like.
As part of the upcoming Nintendo Direct session on April 2 that will contain more details about the console, Nintendo also announced “Switch 2 Experience” events in different parts of the world. These events are free to attend but require a Nintendo account. Check out the list of cities and dates below, and stay tuned for more information about the Nintendo Switch 2 rollout.
