BMW wants to revolutionize in-car technology by introducing their “Panoramic iDrive” at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. This innovative display and operating system aims to provide a higher level of driver focus, personalization, and ergonomic design. It is expected to be implemented in all new BMW models from late 2025, and it is a big step in technology for the automaker.
At the heart of Panoramic iDrive is the “BMW Panoramic Vision,” a wide head-up display that stretches from A-pillar to A-pillar. It displays important driving information directly in the driver's line of sight, ensuring minimal distraction while the necessary data is easily visible. It includes the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display, which integrates navigation and automated driving cues into the driver's field of vision.
BMW Operating System X serves as the intelligent backbone of Panoramic iDrive. It builds on the Android Open Source Project framework, which provides real-time updates, improved personalization, and seamless integration of third-party apps. Its intuitive interface allows drivers to move widgets from the central touchscreen to the panoramic display with just one swipe.
Further enhancing the driving experience, the multifunction steering wheel features illuminated “shy-tech” buttons with haptic feedback, ensuring intuitive control without distracting attention from the road. It combines touch, voice, and physical controls to provide fluid interaction.
Over time, the system is designed to adapt to the driver's habits, and provide suggestions of modes and settings according to personal preferences. The new Panoramic iDrive system will be officially launched in vehicles from the Neue Klasse lineup, which will be released in late 2025.
