Apple seems to be cooking up something new, and this time, it seems the tech-giant is working on a new smart home doorbell. According to Apple insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, this doorbell is expected to compete with well-known smart home doorbells such as Ring and Google Nest.
According to Gurman, the doorbell will have "advanced facial recognition" and will be completely wireless that will integrate with smart home locks. For now, Apple already offers third-party HomeKit locks in its online store, but a doorbell with facial recognition is considered a new venture. According to Gurman, “The idea is that the doorbell can automatically unlock the door for the residents of the house by scanning their face — similar to what Face ID does on their iPhone.” Gurman also shared that Apple could partner with a specific lock manufacturer to offer a complete package with just one purchase. They could also choose to release the product under their own brand and possibly partner with a technology company like Belkin for starters.
Although the doorbell is still in the early stages of development, the project aligns with Apple's big expansion into smart home devices next year. The report says the smart doorbell won't hit the market "before the end of next year," as it aims to take advantage of the company's new in-house networking chip. Apple is also said to release a new smart home control device that can be attached to walls and has a speaker base. A new refresh for Apple TV and HomePod is also expected next year.
