Designer Ronnie Fieg and Kith have introduced their latest collaboration with BMW: a customized 1981 BMW M1 E26. This is the third chapter of their partnership, featuring the fusion of BMW's automotive legacy and Kith's modern vision.
Built from the iconic first model from BMW's M Division, the M1, Fieg's redesign reflects history and innovation. The car went through a year of extensive rebuild, using original parts from the BMW archives. Its exterior features Techno Violet paint, one of BMW's most important finishes, and is further enhanced by a custom Kith M-Series badge on the rear decklid.
The interior is also striking, with BMW Individual Black Merino Leather and Kith's signature monogram pattern. Intricate design can be seen on the seats, headrests, gear shift, door inserts, and floor mats, adding a luxurious touch to the classic sports car.
Under the hood, the M1 retains its original performance. It was powered by a 3.5L inline-six engine with 277 hp and a top speed of around 165 mph — numbers that cemented its status as the fastest German sports car at the time of its release.
“This project is a labor of love,” said Fieg, adding, “The re-creation of this iconic designed in Italy and engineered in Germany through my vision has been an amazing journey. Techno Violet on the M1 is a dream come true.”
