Mercedes-AMG has announced that they are building their first standalone high-performance SUV, marking the brand's debut in developing an SUV entirely in-house. This innovative and rugged off-roader also features a second use of the brand's proprietary AMG.EA electric platform. Development models are set to be tested this winter, with AMG sharing a glimpse of their vision for the future of high-performance electric off-road vehicles.
For more than 25 years, AMG has been active in the high-performance SUV space. Since the release of the ML 55 AMG that established AMG's reputation in the SUV market, the brand's lineup has continued to grow and gain popularity. Today, Mercedes-AMG SUVs have six models, from the compact GLA to the spacious GLS, with the Mercedes-AMG G 63 as a symbol of luxury performance off-roading.
This new full-size SUV will continue the development of new technology currently being tested in AMG's first EV on the platform. Unlike other models in the lineup, this SUV was developed from the ground up by AMG engineers and designers, following AMG's legacy models like the GT, SL, and SLS.
According to Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, this launch is important, and he said, "SUVs are among our most popular models in With the 'Born in Affalterbach' SUV, we are responding to this trend by providing our customers with a truly exciting high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform high-performance architecture follows with a clear philosophy: 'AMG First, EV Second'. This means that the cars are not only good as electric vehicles but also embody the core qualities of AMG emotion and performance."
Currently, the brand is not yet sharing specific details about performance metrics or any images, but it is expected that there will be more updates on the official Mercedes-AMG channels.
