Last week, Elon Musk showed off two of Tesla's latest self-driving concepts. While the autonomous Robotaxi is the main feature, he also revealed the Robovan which does not yet have a specific production date.
The Robovan is described as a fully autonomous transporter that promises to seat up to 20 people and can be adapted to transport goods for commercial or personal use. After seeing the concept, Musk told the audience that the Robovan will be built according to the concept. He told a group of invite-only spectators, “We're going to do it, and this is what it's going to look like.” Although he said the vehicle has "van" in its name, the toaster-shaped EV has an art-deco design that resembles a bus or train. Like the Robotaxi, the Robovan also has no steering wheel or pedals. The robot will drive the vehicle and the purpose of the vehicle is for the maximum comfort of the passengers.
Inside the Robovan, there can be multiple rows of seats facing each other. There are also wall-mounted displays at either end of the cabin and a sliding door on one side while two glass panels stand alongside the roof. According to Musk, the Robovan is customizable and can be easily adapted for different uses. While Tesla has yet to confirm when Robovan production will begin, it is expected to begin in 2027 at the earliest. An unsupervised version of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will be the basis for the future of both Robotaxi and Robovan.
