Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis grossed a paltry $4 million USD at the box office, ranking No. 6 behind the Indian Telugu-language action film Devara: Part 1.
The film directed by Adam Driver did not achieve the expected opening weekend of $5 million USD to $7 million USD, and instead fell under its $120 million USD budget while grossing from 1,854 theaters in North America. According to Variety, the film, which Coppola financed himself, received mixed reviews and faced problems with marketing tactics and AI-generated quotes from film critics. “This film is an ambitious and personal vision. Sometimes, there are movies like this that overcome obstacles and make big money,” said analyst David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research. “But this, it's not progressing. The result will be a huge tax write-off.”
Megalopolis is set in a futuristic America and stars Driver as an architect who aims to rebuild the New Rome metropolis after a disaster. However, he has a dispute with the city's mayor, played by Giancarlo Esposito, who starts a smear campaign against the architect.
