Bong Joon Ho's latest film—the sci-fi comedy Mickey 17—is almost here, and now its first trailer has been released. The film is Bong's first project since 2019's Parasite, which won Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars, and stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo.
Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey 7 written by Edward Ashton in 2022. The story is set in outer space, and it will follow Mickey Barnes, played by Pattinson, as he becomes "expendable" in an interplanetary colony. Mickey's character takes on the most dangerous missions, and the twist is that he is repeatedly cloned whenever he dies on the job.
In the trailer, viewers might think that Ho is making an ordinary sci-fi comedy, but he is known for his deep social analyses. Parasite (2019) and his adaptation of Snowpiercer (2013) were both praised for their clever use of metaphor to show class differences. OKJA (2017) asked about food systems through a speculative future that relies on meat from genetically enhanced animals. But Mickey 17 will be Bong's first film to take us from planet Earth to the cosmos.
