Universal has released a new full-length trailer for Wicked, the upcoming film based on Stephen Schwartz's award-winning Broadway musical. Under the direction of Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians, the film will be released in two parts. The first part serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, where Glinda, the Good Witch of the West (played by Ariana Grande), will tell the untold story between her and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West (Cynthia Erivo).
The trailer begins with Glinda announcing the death of the Wicked Witch of the West to the people of Oz, an event that seems to continue from the end of The Wizard of Oz. Through a series of flashbacks, he begins to retell the events before the famous story. For two and a half minutes, viewers will get a chance to hear the musical's iconic anthem, “Defying Gravity” now performed by Grande and Erivo in an epic cinematic rendition.
The first part of the Wicked movie is set to hit theaters this holiday season, starting on November 22. The second part of the movie is set to be released next year, on November 26, 2025.
