LEGO kicked off San Diego Comic-Con 2024 with the exciting announcement of the LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set. This is the fifth addition to the LEGO Super Mario range for adults, following the launch of Piranha Plant in late 2023.
The new set features favorite characters Mario and Yoshi in a nostalgic tribute to their early days. For the first time ever, fans will see Mario's trusty companion, Yoshi, rendered in 2D LEGO brick form. The new set celebrates the classic Super Mario World game, known for its pixelated visuals and iconic gameplay.
Carl Merriam, Senior Designer for LEGO Super Mario, shared details about the creation process, saying: “We aimed to capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World. By recreating pixel art with LEGO bricks and incorporating a mechanism to run Yoshi with Caped Mario on his back, we brought a piece of gaming history to life. In addition, we also included a dial to make Yoshi's tongue pop in and out, just like in the game!”
Aside from the building experience, the set serves as an eye-catching display piece. It joins other favorite models like The Mighty Bowser and Piranha Plant in the “Adults Welcome” series, designed to rekindle memories for LEGO enthusiasts who grew up with Super Mario.
The LEGO Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set is available for preorder now via the official LEGO site for $125 USD and will be released on October 1st online and in select LEGO stores.
