A man from Japan has been arrested after hiding his father's body in a cabinet for two years to avoid the expensive cost of a funeral. According to the South China Morning Post, 56-year-old Nobuhiko Suzuki did not open his Chinese restaurant in Tokyo for a week, causing neighbors to become concerned and report it to authorities.
When the police arrived, they found his father's body in the wardrobe. According to Suzuki, he found his father dead in January 2023, and he did not report it for fear of the high cost of the funeral.
Although Suzuki appeared remorseful, he also expressed that he felt comfort at the thought of not having to pay for an expensive funeral. He is currently being investigated and will face charges of theft of his father's pension.
A 2020 survey found that the average funeral cost in Japan is 3 million yen, which is three to four times higher than in the US and Europe.
