
Intelligence agents of the LTO and the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) caught a man posing as a LTO chief and extorting money in exchange for the release of impounded colorum buses. The suspect was identified as Jeffrey Morong Mendoza from San Mateo, Rizal.
According to LTO Chairman Vigor Mendoza II, he discovered the scheme after hearing complaints from several bus operators. They were being paid P250,000 each in exchange for their buses being released from impounding. He immediately ordered an investigation by LTO intelligence and coordination with the ACG.
The victims contacted the LTO and ACG to catch the suspect. Mendoza was caught after he accepted P1,000 marked money at the Cubao Terminal Complex in Quezon City. Recovered from him were boodle money, driver’s license, and two cellphones.
Mendoza commended the authorities for the quick arrest of the suspect. He stressed that he will monitor the case to ensure that the suspect receives the appropriate punishment. He also reminded transport operators and the public not to transact with scammers and to immediately report such cases to the authorities.
