social media has been a major factor in the rise of sex tourism in Japan, with many foreign tourists flocking to places like Kabukicho in Tokyo. As the number of foreign tourists continues to rise, more and more people are flocking to these places because of videos they have seen on TikTok and Bilibili. These videos, often taken without consent, spread awareness about sex work in Japan.
In places like Okubo Park, women can be seen waiting for clients with cellphones in hand, negotiating prices using translation apps. Most of the clients are from South Korea, China, Taiwan, as well as countries in North America and Europe. Typically, foreigners pay more than Japanese clients, with prices ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 yen ($105-$210) per session.
Although most women are self-employed, money problems are driving more young people into sex work, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Women commonly face health risks, such as sexually transmitted diseases. Some also experience abuse or videotaping without permission. Although police patrols have increased, they are still struggling to address this underground industry.
