A bus driver in Japan with 29 years of service lost his pension of 12 million yen (approximately $84,000) after he was fired for stealing 1,000 yen ($7) from passengers. He was caught on the bus's security camera in 2022 and after taking the 1,000 yen from a group of five passengers, he failed to properly report the money.
The Supreme Court upheld Kyoto City's decision to fire him and not pay him retirement benefits. Although he won the case initially, the court reversed it and upheld the city's decision. The driver's actions were deemed to have undermined public trust in the bus system and operations.
According to a Kyoto City official, bus drivers have a duty to handle the general funds of passengers, so it is very important to strict action against this kind of violation. He said that if they do not continue with strict measures, it could result in eroding public trust in their system.
