A fun family outing turned into tragedy after the boat capsized in Badian, Cebu on Black Saturday, April 19. A 67-year-old grandfather, Silvio Bajo Verano, and his 17-year-old grandson, Lhenyl Faith Verano Diez.
According to Badian police, the incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. in Brgy. Manduyong. Four people were on board the motor banca—all of them relatives. Due to strong waves, the boat suddenly overturned.
The Philippine Coast Guard, local rescue team, and police immediately responded. The two children, Bea Veronica Verano Biosano (14) and Solenn Marie Verano Diez (12), were rescued. However, Lhenyl, although immediately taken to the hospital, was dead on arrival.
Grandpa Silvio was found several hours later, five meters deep in water. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
Badian is a third-class municipality located 100 kilometers from Cebu City.
