The Kanlaon Volcano erupted this Tuesday morning, sending an ash plume that reached 4,000 meters into the air. According to PHIVOLCS, the eruption began at around 5:51 AM at the volcano's summit vent.
According to the agency, the volcano continues to spew thick smoke reaching 4 kilometers high and being blown by the wind in a southwesterly direction.
Videos showing a vast and thick plume of smoke rising from the volcano have gone viral on social media. The video also shows how dark the area is in the affected areas.
Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan of La Castellana, Negros Occidental said there was ash fall in the barangays of Mansalanao and Sag-Ang. The direction to La Carlota was also affected due to thick smoke. “It's super dark going to La Carlota,” she added.
Classes have been canceled across the city and emergency teams are on alert. The mayor said about 1,300 residents have been evacuated and are now staying in evacuation centers for their safety.
