A woman survived after being trapped in her crashed car for six days by sucking up water that had soaked up her jacket.
According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Brieonna Cassell was driving near the Newton County Landfill on Wednesday, March 6 before she was reported missing.
According to his father, Cassell may have fallen asleep while driving, causing his car to fall into an unseen ditch on the road.
"He was in a lot of pain. He was screaming for help. He could hear cars passing by but he couldn't be seen from the road," his father, Delmar Caldwell, told ABC7 Chicago.
Cassell, who is also a mother of three, was found alive and able to speak six days later by a passerby, who immediately called the local fire department for help.
Cassell survived by using his jacket and hoodie that he had wet in a nearby creek. “He would take his jacket and hoodie and throw them in the water, like he was fishing,” his father said. “Then he would suck the water out of them to drink.”
Cassell suffered severe injuries to his legs, ribs, and wrists. He was immediately transported by helicopter to a Chicago hospital for immediate treatment.
According to a report by local news outlet WTHR, Cassell is currently stable but still needs to undergo surgery due to issues with the healing of his legs.
