Ten MRT-3 passengers were injured after an escalator malfunctioned at Taft Avenue Station on March 8.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr)on March 11, the escalator had a problem due to its main drive chain.
MRT-3 staff immediately carried out repair work after the incident, which was completed on March 11 at 5:33 p.m.
The DOTr also said that they will cover the medical expenses, while the insurance company will look into whether there is any compensation for the lost income of the affected passengers.
"This incident reinforces the DOTr's commitment to privatize transportation infrastructures like the MRT-3 for safer and smoother travel for commuters," the agency added.
‘Unacceptable’
Due to the three-day delay, passengers were forced to use the stairs, which was especially difficult for senior citizens.
According to DOTr Sec. Vince Dizon, the repair of equipment at stations should not take more than three days.
"I reviewed the contract, within 48 hours, any escalator, elevator or device in the MRT-3 should be working again," said Dizon.
The MRT-3 management encourages passengers to report such incidents to their hotline at 09957363129.
They also advised their maintenance provider to conduct intensive regular maintenance to prevent such incidents in the future.
