According to the report, Meta is discussing the possibility of buying a South Korean chip firm as part of its aim to strengthen its AI hardware infrastructure.
Meta is expected to announce its plan to buy FuriosaAI, a chip startup founded by former Samsung and AMD employees, as soon as this month, according to Forbes. FuriosaAI makes chips that speed up the running of AI models like Meta's Llama 2 and Llama 3.
To date, FuriosaAI has raised 90 billion Korean won (about $61.94 million) from investors, including South Korean tech company Naver, based on Crunchbase data. The company also said it is in touch with possible clients from the U.S., Japan, and India.
This move by Meta is clearly part of their goal to reduce dependence on dominant chipmaker Nvidia and in addition to their own attempts to develop more efficient AI accelerator chips. Recently, Meta said they expect to spend up to $65 billion this year to reach their AI goals.
