The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced plans to eliminate the EDSA busway once the capacity of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) is expanded and it is connected to another line. According to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, this is a recommendation that was discussed in a meeting with President Marcos regarding the Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (CTMP).
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is currently working to increase the capacity of the MRT by an additional 30%. The bus lane is expected to be removed when passengers can board the MRT from the EDSA Carousel.
Plans include allowing vehicles with multiple witnesses to use the special lane, as well as collecting tolls from private vehicles plying EDSA to boost the use of public transportation.
The government also plans to convert the EDSA bike lane into "two-wheel lanes" to accommodate motorcycles and reduce accidents. The rehabilitation of EDSA will begin next month.
