Mercedes-Benz announced a significant update to their MBUX Voice Assistant, bringing an AI-driven knowledge feature that offers real-time, natural language responses. This innovative technology uses Microsoft's ChatGPT technology through the Azure OpenAI Service and includes Bing search capabilities, so customers can talk to their car “like a human.”
The expanded assistant can answer a variety of questions related to general knowledge such as pop culture, science, and history. It also supports contextual follow-up questions, making the interaction seamless and intuitive. For example, a user might ask, “How many Grammy awards has a particular artist won?” and follow-up with, “When was the first one won?”—all without having to repeat the subject.
"By adding an AI-driven knowledge feature to our MBUX Voice Assistant, we are making it even easier for customers to connect with their car in a fun and rewarding way," said Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes -Benz.
The update, which is available now, is being rolled out to more than three million vehicles worldwide that have the MBUX infotainment system. Initially offered in German, British English, and American English, the feature can be activated by simply saying “Hey Mercedes” or using the speech button on the steering wheel.
Regarding data privacy, Mercedes-Benz declares that all voice data is anonymized and processed within the secure Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. There is also a risk assessment tool implemented to avoid dangerous or incorrect answers.
