On Monday morning, the Philippine Immigration Bureau (BI) arrested a 46-year-old Chinese national working as a cashier at a supermarket in Parañaque City. The woman was found to have violated the conditions of her work visa.
According to Immigration Bureau records, the woman Chen had a legal work visa but her visa was processed by a different company and not by the supermarket where she actually works in Tambo, Parañaque.
Fortunato Manahan Jr., the head of BI's Intelligence Division, explained that foreign nationals with work visas cannot work for a company other than the company that issued their visa. Any violation of this policy is an illegal act.
The operation was conducted by BI intelligence officers after sending undercover agents to conduct a test buy at the supermarket. When it was confirmed that Chen was working as a cashier, he was immediately arrested.
After the arrest, Chen was brought to the headquarters of the Immigration Bureau in Intramuros, Manila for registration and medical examination. He was also transferred to the detention facility at Camp Bagong Diwa to await a decision on his deportation case.
BI continues to strengthen their campaign against foreigners working illegally in the country to maintain the integrity of the laws.
