The Philippine National Police (PNP) stated that the cases filed against Vice President Sara Duterte are not politically motivated, but rather an exercise of the agency's constitutional duty to uphold the law.
"The PNP remains committed to its mandate to enforce the law without fear or favor. The filing of cases against any individual, regardless of their status or political affiliation, reflects our duty to the Constitution and the Filipino people," said PNP chief Rommel Marbil in a statement on Sunday, December 1, just days after Quezon City police filed charges of disobedience and assault against Duterte.
He emphasized the importance of the law enforcement's role in maintaining public trust, stating that failing to act on accusations could create the perception of bias within the police force.
"If we do not file cases against the accused, what will the people say? The police are afraid; the law only focuses on the poor. We cannot allow such views to take root. Our duty is to enforce the law for everyone, regardless of their status, because justice does not discriminate," said Marbil in a mix of Filipino and English.
