Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino domestic helper who was sentenced to death in Indonesia in 2010 for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin, has received a change in her sentence from death to life imprisonment.
In 2015, her execution was postponed following appeals from Philippine officials, who requested that she testify against a human and drug smuggling syndicate.
Veloso continues to maintain her innocence, claiming that she was unknowingly used as a drug mule. Her case has garnered widespread sympathy in the Philippines, where supporters believe that she was unaware of the drugs.
Her return to the Philippines reflects the close relationship between the Philippines and Indonesia and highlights the challenges faced by many Filipino workers abroad.
