Twenty volcano-related earthquakes were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Tuesday, October 29, according to a Phivolcs report.
Based on its bulletin on October 30, state seismologists noticed a sudden increase in activity at Kanlaon Volcano from 12 a.m. on October 29 to 12 a.m. on October 30.
Phivolcs has only registered one to three earthquakes at the volcano every day for the past week, except on October 22, when six earthquakes were recorded. There has also been an increase in sulfur dioxide emissions from the volcano, which have reached 10,074 tons per day since Monday — more than double the 4,853 tons recorded on October 27.
Most of the earthquake activity was centered on the volcano, but Phivolcs also recorded earthquakes in nearby areas in Negros Occidental, including La Castellana, La Carlota, Binubuhan, and Guinpana-an.
Phivolcs warned of possible hazards such as sudden phreatic eruptions, which occur when groundwater comes into contact with hot magma and generates steam.
The state seismology bureau also strictly prohibits entry into the volcano's 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the flying of aircraft near the volcano.
