Liam Payne, a former member of the popular British boy band One Direction, died at the age of 31 on Wednesday after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to local authorities.
A police report confirmed that Payne, who is also a composer and guitarist, suffered serious injuries from a fall at the Casa Sur Hotel in Palermo, Buenos Aires. According to Alberto Crescenti, head of the city's emergency medical service, Payne's injuries were so severe that he was "not life-saving," so there was no chance of him being saved.
Emergency responders arrived seven minutes after receiving a 911 call around 5:04 PM local time. Unfortunately, they were unable to save Payne, and he was confirmed dead when they arrived on the scene.
Liam Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction, which was formed in 2010 through the British talent show The X Factor. With Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, Payne was part of one of the most successful pop groups of the decade. In 2016, the group went on an indefinite hiatus, though they never officially announced the split.
