You may not know the Flos “Snoopy” lamp by name, but I'm sure you are familiar with it. Whether it is design-led spaces in different parts of the world, it has been a symbol of good taste since it was created in the '60s. Now, it has a new color!
In 2024, the Snoopy lamp will have a navy blue shade, joining the previous orange, green, and black variants.
Apart from the new color, the lamp retains the original details developed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1967. This includes its iconic shape, which like the name of the lamp, was inspired by the cartoon Snoopy.
The blue color is inspired by another Castiglioni brothers design called “Sciuko.” According to Flos, "For historically significant objects designed by great masters, Flos is careful and respectful in introducing new colors, starting with the study of archive materials." The colorful nuances chosen for the Snoopy range were inspired by the Sciuko lamp, a versatile spotlight designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1966, and popularized for its rich color palette.
Like previous versions, the blue Snoopy has a marble base, a thick glass disc to diffuse light, and an enamelled aluminum shade with three cooling holes. "Although its volume looks unbalanced, the Snoopy lamp is stable due to the perfect weight distribution of its components," according to Flos. “The inclined design of the lamp directs the light almost entirely to the worktop area, with little output on the other side. This lighting concept was unconventional for its time and remains innovative and well-appreciated to this day.”
The Snoopy lamp retails for €1,280 (approximately PHP 80,500). Take a closer look at it in the gallery above, and head over to the Flos website to find out more details.
