A motorist is now facing the possible loss of his license after he was allegedly caught driving drunk in Bonifacio Global City (BGC). The incident, which was captured on video and quickly spread on social media, immediately reached the attention of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, expressed dismay after watching the viral video. The footage shows the driver and another companion apparently disobeying traffic laws.
"It was an irresponsible act that put the lives of other motorists at risk. Fortunately, there was no accident," Mendoza said in a statement. "We will not tolerate this kind of behavior on the road, so we have issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) against the owner of the vehicle and the driver," he added.
The SCO, signed by LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division head Renante Militante, orders the driver—a resident of Sta. Mesa, Manila—to appear at the LTO Central Office on October 15. They are also required to submit a letter why they should not be held liable for reckless driving (Sec. 48 of R.A. 4136), drunken driving (Sec. 53 of R.A. 4136) , and being "improper to operate a motor vehicle" (Sec. 27(a) of R.A. 4136).
If found guilty, he could face the heaviest penalty of license revocation.
The investigation stems from a viral video posted by "Hombre Estu" titled "Drunk Driving at BGC," which was taken on September 23 along 7th Avenue at Bonifacio High Street. According to Militante, the motorist was driving against the one-way street and made a dangerous maneuver.
The SCO also warned that not attending the hearing or not submitting the letter will be considered a waiver of the right to defend oneself. A decision will only be made based on the evidence available, and the motorist's license and vehicle are temporarily pending for a thorough investigation.
