Pharrell Williams is already known in the world of fashion, music, and even skincare – now, he's added LEGO set designer to his list.
Pharrell introduced his own spaceship LEGO set, called Over the Moon. The set was conceptualized and designed in collaboration with the LEGO team over several months, with the company saying they came up with hundreds of potential ideas.
They had a gold and black spaceship rising into the sky, leaving a pastel jet stream in its midst. The total set has 966 pieces, including 51 different minifigure heads, and the designer team said the hardest part was adjusting the jet stream so it would have stability while still looking dynamic.
Pharrell's relationship with LEGOs goes back a long time. The artist's documentary, Piece by Piece, was shot by director Morgan Neville using the LEGO lens. For his set, he also took inspiration from his experience of seeing Air Force planes fly past his house as a child.
"Pharrell said, 'When I was a kid, my perception of reality was based on a 20-mile radius. And in the middle of it is the Atlantis Apartments. We live in the crash zone of the Air Force Base, where the Blue Angels always fly,'” Pharrell said. “So, my reference for looking up is always jets. And when you think about more – what usually flies the highest, if you can, are space shuttles.”
“I grew up in a time when humanity was obsessed with the sky, technology, and ultimately rocket systems. When I was a kid, the space shuttle was the thing we were looking at that could take you not only to where you are, but, like, to the Moon.”
Pharrell's Over the Moon set is available for pre-order now for $109.99 USD on the LEGO website.
